Cross-Chain Bridges & Interoperability: The Connected Blockchain Future

The Multi-Chain Reality

Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, and others will coexist. But value trapped on one chain is less useful than value that flows freely.

How Bridges Work

  1. Deposit ETH into bridge contract on Ethereum
  2. Bridge locks ETH and verifies deposit
  3. Wrapped token minted on destination chain
  4. To return: burn wrapped token, bridge releases original ETH

Types

Lock-and-Mint: Most common. Risk: hacked bridge = all locked assets stolen.

Liquidity Networks: Stargate, Across. Lower risk, depends on liquidity.

Native Bridges: Built into L2 architecture. Most secure but slower.

The Security Problem

$2.5B+ stolen from bridge exploits. Ronin ($625M), Wormhole ($320M), Nomad ($190M). Bridges are high-value targets with complex codebases.

Evaluating Safety

  1. TVL and operational track record
  2. Validator set decentralization
  3. Audit history from reputable firms
  4. Insurance/recovery plan

Practical advice: Minimize bridge usage. Use native bridges for large amounts. Never bridge more than you can afford to lose.
